What we’ll do

Birch Bay is an ideal place to learn the basics of clam digging. During this two-hour guided trip, you’ll learn to identify, find, and responsibly harvest Manila littleneck clams and native littleneck clams.

• Meet on the beach: We’ll begin with a brief introduction before heading onto the tide flats.

• Learn the habitat: Discover where each species lives and how to tell them apart.

• Know the rules: We’ll cover size requirements, daily limits, and responsible harvesting.

• Dig for clams: Learn where and how deep to dig as we work different areas of the tide flat.

• Prepare your catch: We’ll cover purging, handling, and simple preparation ideas.

Pricing

Introductory pricing for our inaugural season:

• Adult: $49

• Youth (Ages 12–18): $25

Gear and details

All you need to bring is a Washington State Shellfish License (ages 15+) and warm layers with rain boots or water shoes. On chilly or windy days, a jacket and beanie are key.

Note: A Discover Pass is required for parking at Birch Bay State Park. If you don’t already have one, you can easily purchase an annual or one-day pass online here.

We provide the rest:

• Hand rakes and harvest gloves

• Mesh catch bags

• A 5-gallon bucket to purge your clams (you get to keep it)

Age requirement & licensing:

• Open to ages 8 and up.

• Kids under 15 do not need a shellfish license.

• Each harvester must actively participate in digging their own catch and keep their harvest in a separate container.
